I wish I had good things to say about The Little White Horse. I truly wanted to like it but unfortunately that was not the case. Not only did it not grab me, it didn’t even really pick up until the eighth chapter (there are only twelve chapters). The story dragged on and on, never really adding much to the plot.

While overall I am not a fan of the novel, I will say the narrative was intriguing and it had a cuteness to the story that I didn’t particularly mind. It kind of felt like being told a bedtime story.

Another thing I wanted to talk about was the vocabulary. In what seems like a middle grade book the vocabulary was actually quite extensive. I had to look up many a word. While I don’t mind that, I actually enjoy it because I want to expand my vocabulary, I’m not sure how young children will feel about it.

Lastly, I wanted to mention the movie adaptation. I am more fond of the movie adaptation, The Secret of Moonacre Valley. I feel the movie better portrays how I felt the story should have gone.

La pelicula estuvo mejor en cuanto al interes amoroso

The Little White Horse may very well be the sweetest, cutest and most happy book I've ever read in my life, and ever will read! It had a beautiful story, and each character had a distinct personality, which enhanced the already amazing work. Rarely have I read a book in which things were so perfectly woven together to create a perfect tale. Absolutely fantastic!

My favorite book in the world!!!! :) Everyone should read it. It should be a book that is cherished. Happy reading!!!

So great.

Delightful. Wish I had read this as a young girl, I would have loved it passionately.

“The Little White Horse” is essentially a fleshed out fairy tale- like LM Montgomery and Hans Christian Anderson collaborated and this is the happy result. As in most fairy tales, the characters and their desires are rather flat and simplistic. Things that wouldn’t make sense in a workaday novel (ie instantaneous love/engagements/forgiveness/repentance/revelatory knowledge/friendship) seems perfectly plausible in this tale.

Maria is recently orphaned and finds herself in the care of a never-before-met uncle, and therefore part-proprietress of the mystical and magical Moonacre estate. It is wrapped in dark secrets of the past, and only Maria the Moon Princess can rectify them.

The writing is gorgeous- the scenery, the food!, the descriptions of the people. Goudge paints pictures with words. And I swear I could smell Marmaduke’s feasts off the page.

Everything wraps up with Dickinsonian perfection. Basically, this is the story I would have liked to have written.

I can’t wait for my kids to read this.
