A lovely, enchanting, gorgeous children’s book but I can’t quite get over the incest and misogynistic morals of the time lol

I remember exactly how this book came into my possesion. I was strolling through Borders(missed so much) and I saw the name J.K Rowling out of the corner of my eye. I am a HUUUUGE Harry Potter fan so with out even reading anything on it I picked this little jewl up and took it to be my own. Man was I suprised to find that this book will forever be one of my favorite childhood books!

The pro's:
Amazing characters that consume you with their every action and an amazing story that held me hostage till I read the very last word in this book. A great little love story thrown in there that makes this grey, grey world seem a bit more colorful and lively. A good read for stormy nights with a mountain of blankets and a hot cup of tea.

The con's:
Maybe it's just me but I did find myself lost sometimes and would have to try to piece things together to find my place again. Other than that the only other con is that this story had to end.

8 year old me would have given it 5 stars. 50 year old me gives it 3 stars, and that is mainly due to the wonderful, vivid descriptions Goudge writes. Seriously, I could read an entire book of her just describing things, I wouldn't need a plot.

As for the plot of this book - parts are lovely & parts made my skin crawl. It really really bugged me how multiple characters kept telling the main character, a 13 year old girl, to not be curious, to not ask questions and to never to show anger. Ugh. Not an appropriate message to send to young girls. Also, all the family inbreeding and early teen marriage was gross. I loved all the animal characters and wished their had been more magic in the book than there was.

On the whole, it was fine but I just can't gush over any children's book at my age. I can't read them with the innocence the books require.

I found this whimsical tale entertaining yet, even though it was a good fantasy novel however it was not my cup of tea.

Pastoral and fairy tale-like! Glad I finally got to it.

Memory of childhood. I love vary-tale like stories. The adorable couples are shinny cherry on the cupcake.
