I read this as a child, and thanks to wonderful librarians who figured out which book it was with very little information, reread it as an adult.

This is my kind of fantasy! I was immediately drawn into the story by the gothic feel of the journey from London to Moonacre. This book has so much that I love in a story- lost love, animals, good vs evil, whimsy, adventure, etc. The writing is beautifully descriptive- lovely scenery. I also appreciated the spiritual undertones. A charming, cozy children’s classic that I will be revisiting.

There have only been a couple of books/series' that brought into my heart a legitimate yearning for the world they contain. Moonacre has joined Narnia and Middle-Earth on that list. Goudge's book brought tears to my eyes several times with the pure nobility of it's characters. Both human and non. I have to thank my lovely wife Cathryn, my own moon princess, for recommending this one.

DID NOT FINISH: 36%

It felt like this book rambled on but never went anywhere interesting.  86 pages of what Maria wore, what the lyrics to a song were and how much the dog liked to eat.

Well, this was certainly written in 1946.

For a while I was under the assumption this was written in 2001 (since that's when this version was published), and I was like "this can't have been written then." The way people were described (good characters vs evil characters) and the morals that were supposed to be taken from this book (women shouldn't be curious) were very...old-fashioned. I felt relieved when I realized that this was not, in fact, written in the 21st century.

I am a huge lover of the movie, and it was difficult not to compare the two. Despite the movie having its issues, the movie definitely took many creative liberties. Sir Benjamin being not grouchy was the change that surprised me the most, although I'm very glad they got rid of him wearing a huge white wig for the movie. The way his voice is described as "deep, rich, [and] fruity" made me giggle way too much.

The author uses the word "ejaculated" as a synonym for "said" eight times, which is eight times too many, in my opinion.
