This was my all-time favorite book from my childhood. Elizabeth Goudge was one of my favorite authors, and I collected her books for a long time.

I came to this little novel by way of an essay by Diana Wynne Jones; it's the mannered novel of a girl who inherits a tiny kingdom that hides in the fold of the English countryside. Very English, very charming. A bit too much suggestion that the girl should curb her curiosity and avoid conflict for my wholehearted enjoyment.

I know this book doesn't *really* deserve 4 stars, but looking at the definition on Goodreads, it does - I really like it! Partly I know because I've read and re-read it since I was little and because it's a fun easy read but also because it is a good story! Yes, there are a few loose threads, it's sometimes hard to figure out what century exactly it's meant to be (despite a date being given) and the end wraps up far too quickly, but it's pacy and whimsical and fun (also I have read it so many times now I just adapt things in my head as I go along to make more sense...). The BBC made a travesty of an adaptation some time when I was young. Don't watch it. This is very much a case where the book is better!

Didn't like it nearly as well on re-reading. As a child I found all of the family determinism and feudal undertones to be romantic. Not so much as an older person.

The little white horse is a comforting read full of whimsical cozy characters and settings. The characters are generally likable and the plot is engaging. The descriptions are vivid and joyful.

awful, misogynistic. the absolute worst i am screaming

mmmmmh.

This was a good read aloud. The girls enjoyed listening. There were a few slower parts, but the overall story was so beautiful!

This book is so amazing... I fell in love with the movie the first time I saw it and when I found out that there was a book, I just had to read it as soon as possible. This book is one that I will probably read at least once a year. The story and writing carry you to Moonacre on the back of that little white horse. I’m also a sucker for happy endings and the ending of this book has got to be one of the best that I have ever read. Everyone married the person they loved. Even Miss Heliotrope found her long lost love. I also loved Robin and Maria together. For two people so young, they knew how to support each other and do what needed to be done. This is a true fairytale that should go down with the greats.
