This book was required reading for my After the Bauhaus: Design from the Interwar Period to the Age of Climate Crisis class at uni. It was a great book and I honestly think I'll read it again at a later date. Victor Papanek writes his views on design in such an easy and accessible way.
The reclining chairs were certainly a very interesting idea. I would be very interested to see if that would be an option for students today.

"Visor-like eyeglasses" Is this a sneaky Star Trek reference.

Overall, I felt that Papanek's view of design was to broad, perhaps this is with the lens of today, however when he brings the question of the responsibility of designers I feel like a more refined approach would have been far more beneficial.

Very bold thesis statement! Designers have a strong professional and even moral obligation to create items that are functional, aesthetic and well made (points for ecological sensitivity, too). They should not contribute to mindless consumerism through overbuilding or churning out endless variations of the same essential product. Wonderful sentiments indeed.

I don't know if it is because I come from engineering background but this book was preaching something that's already ingrained in my way of thinking. Ok, I will do some stupid things that affect only myself, but when it comes to creating solution I already think with sustainability, security and performance in my mind. One thing that I didn't like was the great number of examples, I'm one of the people who need explanation rather than demonstration.
