I enjoyed this historical perspective on animal conservation in South Africa. It’s written in an engaging style, even though the content is difficult to hear at times. I’ve never seen a rhino in the wild, but now I’m eager to see one!
This is a non-fiction tale about a man named Grant who has spent his life fighting the cause to save the Rhinos. Along with many other influential and inspirational conservationists and animal enthusiasts he has been on the frontline to see the work, and put the work in himself, to help protect one of the most amazing animals on our planet. Rhino of all kinds are in danger, and especially those in Africa and not in captivity or special protected parks. The Rhino are hunted for horn, and then left for dead, and the horn is sold on the black market as a supposed remedy for all kinds of ailments. Unbeknownst to many is the untold suffering a Rhino goes though after its horn is removed, and then the added insult is that the horn is the same stuff we have in humans, there's nothing 'special' or curative about it. This crime seems like it should be from the past, and should not be happening today, but this book clearly demonstrates that it is ongoing and it's a problem humans need to fight back against. I am really glad to have read this as it had many interesting snippets of information, lots of great charities, organisations and resources, and genuinely was just an insightful and enjoyable read. Highly recommended, 4*s.
