Ryo Suzuri explores a very dark piece of humanity and what being human even means through the eyes of demons clinging desperately to their identities. Or trying to discard them. Obsession and a damning cocktail of hate and love drives every move on this chess board.
This short series was on my list for a while, and I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting the plot direction and characters turned out to be. The tone of these three volumes is both very serious and also a little goofy (I would draw parallels to Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler—but many times more graphic in all aspects).
It is not for everyone, even if you enjoy BL (please see my content warnings, this gets heavy). The horror of the series is certainly driven home in this final installment. Throughout, the erotic aspect of the story is more like an assist to the plot, rather than copious kinky encounters, and there are just enough of them for it to not be too overwhelming and still feel organic.
The only reason I have not given a full 5 stars is because I was taken aback by one particular scene ofsexual body horror near the end that wasn’t really necessary to the plot…? I don’t think, personally. It took me out of the escalation leading to the end of the book.
The ending was satisfying in a really wild way.The series pretty much tells you how things will unfold at the very beginning, but when the events resulting in that prediction happen, it feels nuanced and unexpected—even though it’s simultaneously simple. The mechanic of demons being unable to say the names of other demons that outrank them was the through-line that brought everything together, and it really does make one question what identity means when it is seen or unseen by other people.

I continue being on my knees for Ryo Suzuri for giving me the gift of MADK 🧎🏻♀️
This mangaka has solidified my absolute love and need for manga that explores queer horror 🙏🏼 Truly need as much of it as humanly possible to be in my hands. I absolutely need more stories about obsession and terror and yearning and destruction. WE DESERVE IT 🌈
Still. It’s bittersweet that this has come to an end. I wish we’d gotten more volumes because I genuinely believe that with a little more wiggle room, this story would have blossomed even more incredibly than it already did. At the end of the day, though, this ended exactly how I wanted it to and expected it to.
This was always meant to be about cycles of obsession and how obsession and hatred only breed more. It was no surprise how the relationship between Makoto and J resolves. It was the only natural resolution to their dynamic.
Honestly, part of the true gift of this volume was how much we got to learn about J’s past. I wasn’t sure how much the mangaka would give us, but we got plenty to reinforce that there was only ever going to be one specific conclusion to the story.
Anyway. Long live my king Makoto 🙏🏼 He became an evil bastard and now everyone fears him. As they fucking should. I needed him to destroy J, and in the pursuit become that which he sought to destroy. Now that is what obsession is all about! He let J destroy his soul, and he’s left with all this power and no one at his level. He let J destroy his soul, and only for J to still have the last word. Only for him to live knowing J made him who he is, and he can never snap that tether. I love WINNING 😩👌🏼
*satisfied sigh* Now if only I could be Fjord and be Makoto’s bestie at his side forever 😔 Wouldn’t that be a dream?

The long wait is over and i have finally been able to read the third volume of Madk. This series by Ryo Suzuri is not for the faint of heart. It's about aboy named Makoto who has an intense need to feast on the guts of a demon. And so he summons one to do exactly that. He accidentally summons the most powerful demon of all, J.
In this third volume of the yaoi manga series Makato has become a fully developed demon. And he is set on destroying J by eating all of him and turning into the most powerful demon of the realm himself. A daring quest as the clever J has shown no signs of weakness. And J is very clever. And so Makato goes on a quest to find out J's real name to gain full control over him.
The third volume is another awesome and perhaps final chapter to this chaotic story. The illustrations do not dissapoint and the closing panels of each chapter are absolutely beautiful. But i can't help but feel like it feels a little rushed towards the end. I know the story has to end somehow, and the ending is striking. But i was longing for just a tiny bit more.
Regardless this is still an incredible story. Raw, disgusting and fascinating.
