The only reason I didn't finish this book was this:
I received the second book in the series, and without reading the first one, I started this. It didn't go well. This is not an actual one-star.
This is a review-to-be-changed after reading the first book.

DISCLAIMER: I made the cover illustration! :D I'm also listed on Lakewater Press's website as their illustrator, but I have nothing to do with the books themselves.
Beneath the Skin is the follow-up to In The Blood, which was a pleasant surprise when I read it. BtS does not disappoint--it picks right after ItB ended, and although I felt it dragged at times, it was ultimately a good book. I loved Ottilde's grit, and Oriabel's, so different and yet so similar, shone on every page, and the twists and turns keep you guessing. The ending flat-out broke my heart. :'(
BtS is a worthy successor, and a good addition to any fantasy shelf.
