Mages Unbound is the second book in in this series. While, other readers have said this book can be read as a stand alone novel and I do kind of agree; it is better appreciated if you read the first book, Sirens Unbound first.

The first book sets the stage for this book with the characters and the world. Most of the first book explains the missions of the Bant siblings and who everyone was. So, it was slow reading for me. However, when it came to this book, all of those logistics were not needed and therefore it made this book faster reading.

Because there was more happening in this book and it moved at a faster pacing; I became more interested in what I was reading. Additionally, my connection to the Bant siblings was stronger. These books are some nice fantasy reads. If you are a fantasy reader, you might pick up these books.

This is book 2 of The Fifth Mage War Series. We start off where we left off in Book 1, no geis is broken and now Amy and Mary know about their family history. This book has a lot going on and bounces from person to person, place to place, so it does take a little time to absorb it all, but it's so worth it. The book is long, over 400 pages, but it takes that long to tell the story that needs to be told.

Some events really pulled at my heart, while others make a character or two easy to dislike. I don't know their motives for sure, how 'REAL' they are to what they say and do, but I hope to find out soon in the 3rd book coming July 2021.

Laura gives us character we want to love, and in my case, want to hate. An appendix at the end also helps you keep straight all the characters in the book so you remember, who did what, and how they fit into all of it. I really appreciated that because there is ALOT of characters to keep track of.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
