I read this to complete a queer poetry prompt in a reading challenge -- I'm not usually one to seek out poetry so this was a different one for me.

I liked some of it, but I think poetry and it's formatting is mostly lost on me.

This is one of the best poetry collections I've ever read. Vuong writes absolutely stunningly--I don't think I've ever read a poem of his I didn't love. His writings about his father hit me the hardest. I'd absolutely recommend this book to anyone who likes poetry at all, and maybe even anyone who doesn't.

Beautiful poetry - some of which had deeper meanings that may have gone over my head
explores themes of family, war, immigration, love, and death as a reflection of the poet's past experiences

not gonna pretend like i got any of this, buT its gonna be fun to figure out and grow with. there's alot of pain and destruction in this collection and i had to put it aside for a bit in the process of reading this. I dont think i got all the trigger warnings but just know its heavy and deals alot with dense and inherently sad and traumatic topics.

"maybe we pray on our knees because god only listens when we're this close to the devil"

"from men, i learned to praise the thickness of walls. from women, i learned to praise. if you are given my body, put it down."

"as if my finger, / tracing your collarbone / behind closed doors, / was enough / to erease myself."
