This book stressed me tf out, which is really just another way of saying that I'm deeply invested in these characters.
Their development is so well done. Maldynado displays new depths of intelligence, Books is becoming a somewhat competent mercenary, and Sicarius is capable of emotion, jealousy specifically.

Okay, this adventure series continues to be compelling and fun
Did I really just read three books before Sicarius and Amaranthe kissed, though? What? Are you kidding? Please ravish each other, I don’t know how much more of this I can take lol

I found it very, very difficult to write a review for this book without repeating everything I said about The [b:Emperor's Edge|10031259|The Emperor's Edge (The Emperor's Edge #1)|Lindsay Buroker|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51jpNjpFc%2BL._SL75_.jpg|14926833] series in my previous reviews.
It's as fast paced, as character driven with dry wit and humor as the other installments, and - at least for me - even more gripping than the previous [b:Dark Currents|11672438|Dark Currents (The Emperor's Edge #2)|Lindsay Buroker|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51hrgEN9L%2BL._SL75_.jpg|16617961] (though that might be partially due to road stories not being my preferred brand of tea and the fact that the character developments from the previous books come to -partial, mind you!- fruition here (no, I will *not* tell you, how. Read for yourself!).
Forced to also mention the downsides, I can list only two:
First, the book is too short (its 110100+ words were over much too fast), and
Second, it ends on a cliffhanger (no, two cliffhangers actually: there's the emperor's note and the labyrinthine developments!) that makes me itch for what comes next. I truly hope we don't have to wait too long for [b:Emperor's Edge|10031259|The Emperor's Edge (The Emperor's Edge #1)|Lindsay Buroker|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51jpNjpFc%2BL._SL75_.jpg|14926833]'s continuation.

Again, I find myself a little confused as to why I enjoyed reading this. Just like the last two installments in the Emperor's Edge series, the world building is murky and hardly thrilling, the plot is so-so (this plot was an improvement, but still not a strong point), and pace is a little slow.
But Buroker has a gift for dialogue and character interactions which kept me thoroughly immersed throughout this adventure. I'm not a fan of Axstyr, and Books is sometimes irritatingly pedantic and inept, but as a team, the Emperor's Edge is endearing and engaging. I don't really understand where the group is, don't really care very much about what they're doing, but I'm rooting for this ragtag bunch wholeheartedly.

Pretty solid! The romance is a really, really slow burn, but it'd have to be when there's so many parts in the series. I liked this part, and I'm excited to read the next.
