Just didn't speak to me - it's a classic I know, but I didn't feel anything for any of these characters. Hemingway's writing is called spare and minimal, and it felt that way too, in that I couldn't absorb myself into any of their feelings because the story happened and was told at such a surface level. The only lovely parts of the book were the plain descriptions about Jakes travels across Europe - the heat of the day on the bus, drinking wine with the locals, trout fishing in a cool stream - and the rest was very much following people I didn't care much about as they drank and discussed and flirted and fought. The introduction in my version highlights that off the page is the trauma of a great war, but even with this spectre I couldn't feel much sympathy for any of these characters.

There's a lot happening and at the same time nothing at all is going on.

Everyone is a complete asshole and there is inexplicable fly fishing. Not the greatest book ever tbh.
