dark mysterious reflective fast-paced

Beautifully written and so emotionally charged, The Deep tells, through the lens of fantastical merfolk, the story of generational trauma, the history of enslaved black people and explores the heaviness of carrying said history. I was in love with every single word of this.

Perfect.

How terrible must it be to carry all that grief for your people. But what is a people without knowing their history.

My heart beats for this book and this book only.

I should have read more about the book's origin and premise before starting it, not knowing it was an origin story collaboration based on a song. The different chapters of the book didn't tie together in any obvious way so I was confused and felt that the writing was choppy and disconnected.  I think it's a great concep but it just didn't work for me.

3.5: This is such a cool story. The idea behind it and the world is so interesting. The ideas of the mermaids created because of the cruelty of the slavery is very innovative. I also loved the collective history kind of in The Giver. The burden of trauma that erases a person is so interesting. That all being said I wanted more from this. I felt like the characters were all a bit boring. The romance in it felt a bit forced for someone that just rediscovered personhood. I think this book needed more space to exist and for some stronger pacing.

This was beautiful. A thoughtful take on some painful history, tackling the very ancestral trauma that so many Black people carry in our bodies and souls. I felt so seen listening to this. Also never have I ever been called out for reading a book on 2x speed by the narrator 😂
