The premise of this slow-moving novella is haunting - the babies of pregnant women thrown overboard slave ships are nurtured by the ocean and grow to become a community of mermaid-ish folks, one of whom is designated at all times to carry the collective history and memory of the people so that all need not constantly bear the pain. Plenty to ponder on, but also, this is just a very cool take on mermaid life - very lgbtq friendly.

This is such a beautifully put together novella. The concept is so fascinating and impactful. I could genuinely sit for years picking apart the themes and ideas here.

Really interesting premise and story but I didn’t find it particularly well written.

4 stars. The writing style worked really well for me here whereas it normally wouldn’t. I loved the theme of this and the plot was unique and well thought out in the way it ties into history. This was a very enjoyable read. My only regret is that I wish I would’ve listened to the audiobook since it’s narrated by Daveed Diggs and I adore him. If I ever do a re-read I’m definitely doing so via audio just for that reason.
