Unique and creative . A book about generational trauma and responsibility. The book is almost too short and abrupt but it packs a punch.

I just adore the ambiance of Rivers' writing style, and this work is no exception-- I did wish there was a little more showing than telling, especially when one of the main themes was a people who chose not to have collective memory of their history and inflicted the task on a single member. I also wasn't completely sure why this was deemed necessary as it seems pretty cruel, especially when it prevented the others from empathizing with Yetu's struggle to cope with generations worth of first person intergenerational trauma.

I didn't enjoy this. I can see what the author was going for and while I liked the concept I felt the execution was lacking. I really wasn't invested in any of the characters or their actions.

The Deep is an allegory for the weight of generational trauma and the importance of collective memory of the past. Covering the breadth and history of an unknown mermaid society from African slave mothers cruelly thrown overboard to a thriving underworld metropolis to a post-Apocalyptic future.
While it took me a moment to wrap my head around it absolutely blew my mind with its scope and stunning prose that flows seamlessly, weaving in and out of perspective, time, and setting perfectly. Very much giving ‘The Giver’ vibes with an Afrofuturistic flare.
Absolutely bingeable and I immediately bought a physical copy to reread in the future.
