This was my first read for the Trans Rights Readathon 2024, and such a short audiobook has left me stumped on how to translate my thoughts into a review. This was a unique story about generational trauma, identity, community, and oral storytelling.

The Deep is based on a rap song by the same name by the group "clipping." The song begins when pregnant African slaves thrown overboard on slave ships give birth to a new aquatic species. In the book, they form an underwater civilization in which the memories & trauma of the entire community is held by one person.

This novella has intersex mermaid-esque creatures from the deep, sapphic characters, and brings a great perspective about generational trauma and identity to the surface (ha). Generational trauma can't be held by just one person. By being held by an entire community, you share support and identity.

This audiobook is also narrated by Daveed Diggs, the one who sings "The Deep" (the song), I would definitely recommend the audio! Although the storytelling wasn't always my favorite, I enjoyed the concept and writing style. 3.5 stars.

I thought a lot about [b:The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas|92625|The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas|Ursula K. Le Guin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1739034156l/92625._SY75_.jpg|89324] while reading this. I know that was not the intention here, but it definitely colored how I viewed the actions and culture of the wajinru. A beautiful story though. I feel certain I will think about it often.
