The Rainbow Fish is immensely popular due to his unique glittering scales. When a smaller fish asks for a scale, the Rainbow Fish rejects him...and in turn is shunned. After seeking advice, the Rainbow Fish decides to share his scales with all the other fish, and this act of selflessness helps him feel good.
While most picture books espouse ideas of individuality, this book conflates individuality with conceitedness...which doesn't seem healthy. I also have problems with the idea of giving away pieces of yourself to appease/bribe others.

My student wasn’t necessarily into it, but re-reading this as an adult felt like a big old hug and little kiss on the forehead.

This boom is about communism! What? If she doesn't give everyone one of her colorful scales then she is shunned by her community!?!!? This book pisses me off.
