i think niko is one of the smartest women in the game & i really appreciated the nuanced sequencing, her life refracted through a lot of tunes i also hold dear, a newfound curiosity about a few bands i don't have much relation to, & piecing together her experience/theory of dad rock (and starting to consider my own) as the book unfolded.

god, this book struck the balance beautifully between being music critique and memoir (it helps that i’ve listened to most of the artists covered, and know of nearly all of the rest). favorite essays were, respectively, the mountain goats one and the julien baker one. those are my two favorite artists that were in here, so that’s truly not surprising lol
