Interesting read. The main character was a bit annoying, quite full of himself, an opinion that Wilbur Smith himself shares in the Afterword as well. Lots of unanswered questions that I won't list here to avoid giving out spoilers. Despite all that, it was fun reading the first 70% of the book. After that it was just going on forever. I don't know if I'll be spending more time on the next books in the series, will probably pick those up in between better reading.

I tried, but the fact that he couldn't hold my interest with a description of a hippopotamus hunt in ancient Egypt says it all.

DNF. I began to have misgivings immediately, but I usually try to make a good-faith effort to reach Nancy Pearl's Rule of 50 before truly giving up on a book. Unfortunately, I could make it only 19 pages in before I had to set this aside with distaste. It reads like bad fanfiction romance written by a man. The multiple cringey descriptions of a fourteen-year-old girl's breasts, thighs and virginity within just those first 19 pages was pretty creepy. I won't be wasting any more time on anything by this author.

I love this book. This was my 2nd time reading it. It's a little graphic in parts. There's action, love, and everything between.

After many stops and starts I finally decided to give this book up once and for all. I tried picking it back up this weekend and after struggling through another 20-30 pages decided to call it quits. To be fair, I made it to 160 out of 840 so it's not like I didn't try. While Egyptian mythology can be interesting, this story just kept going on and on with no destination seemingly in mind. The narrator was too much to take as well. He was an expert in basically everything you could imagine and loved to keep telling you about it. Ugh.

What an epic!

This was a great read and a truly epic story. It was compelling while also including a lot of information about ancient Egypt. I was happy when I finished because it was so long, but also sad when I finished it because I loved the characters.
