i love a good space fiction! rlly enjoyed the book, the main character kinda read to me as neurodivergent so it was nice to see the little things in there
i did find the whole age gap romance to be very gross and it kinda took me out of the book… i know he was a complex character but i really didn’t like him…

Thanks to Random House for the free copy of this book.

- Honestly, I read this whole 250 page book in one day and I'm not entirely sure what to make of it. @carrickreads called it Jane Eyre in space, and I think that's pretty dead on (especially because I thought James was a total jerk).
- The lack of quotation marks around dialogue always makes me feel like the characters are at a remove from me, like I am watching the proceedings float by through a window.
- I didn't like how June always had the solution that dozens of other geniuses working for months or years couldn't come up with, even when she didn't have any formal training.
- Now, I've said all this stuff I didn't like, and yet, I blew through the book and needed to know what was going to happen. Like I said, I have no idea how I feel about it!

Listen, normally when I don't like a book, I can see what it was about it that didn't work for me, but would work for others, but I felt like this was just...bad. The MC spends about 50% of the book as a 12 year old (idk why she had to be 12 except she isn't taken v seriously), the "romance" doesn't begin until the last like 60 pages (and is with a guy who knew her when she was a literal child and he was already an adult?), NONE of the science is actually explained (which is written off has her not being able to put into words her ideas), and a man is described as smelling "feral" not once, but twice. I had to read it, so now you do too. Underdeveloped, oddly paced (hopped forward through the story very strangely), and NOT the feminist Martian I was promised. I hate poorly reviewing things but damn, y'all. Also I'm so confused by the synopsis of this book talking about a "fiery love affair that threatens a rescue mission," like...that just doesn't happen. Or if it does, it's about three pages of the whole novel. And also I saw this on LGBTQIA+ lists and it's BARELY there so please don't go in looking for it. Okay, I'm done ranting now.
