i love a good space fiction! rlly enjoyed the book, the main character kinda read to me as neurodivergent so it was nice to see the little things in there
i did find the whole age gap romance to be very gross and it kinda took me out of the book… i know he was a complex character but i really didn’t like him…

I really enjoyed the book for the author’s ability to vividly capture the main character’s experience of isolation and the fear of the unknown. Female astronaut June begins her space career as a young adolescent by enrolling in the National Space Program at the age of twelve. Six years later, she achieves the title of engineer.

June’s story revolves around the missing spacecraft named Inquiry that disappeared when she was twelve years old. Now as an eighteen-year-old, June is haunted by the mystery of the spacecraft and is determined to find out what happened to the missing crew. Filled with easy-to-understand spacecraft terminology and the momentum of exploring the unknown, In the Quick is an excellent story for space lovers and for readers who enjoy the thrill of adventure rooted in a not-so-distant future.

This story is... Interesting. In broad terms, it's well written, engaging, and contemplative. But when it comes to the mood it is often tense and sorrowful. There are few genuinely happy moments, and because of the way it's written there were numerous times I felt detached and dissociated. Additionally, I am not a fan of the ending. Specifically:
I hated James, and detest the fact that she goes back to him.
That really is a major spoiler, by the way. Anyway. Because of its quality, and the high degree of recognition I felt toward the main character, the flaws don't hold it back too much for me. But... They're still too much for me to feel happy about the book. Which is sad.

***Book Review***

In the Quick

I received an e-arc from @Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The description of In the Quick makes it out to be some science fiction romance. It is not. No relationship even starts until 70% of the way into the book. Even then it is highly problematic and not the main focus of the book. If you want romance then this is not the book for your.

In the Quick is a book about an orphaned genius, June, who was raised by her aunt and uncle. Except only her uncle really understands her. He is a scientist for the space program, a program that has expanded to a few stations and a long term exploration mission to the outer solar system.

June’s uncle died when she was eleven leaving her with an aunt who does not understand her at all. A year later the long range mission has a malfunction and goes dark. This mission is her uncle’s legacy and June devotes her life to honoring his memory by making it right. Although, I doubt she would see such deep philosophical meaning behind her obsession.

June does develop a relationship with one of her uncle’s students. The relationship is troubling and disturbing. However, it is thankfully not a major part of the book.

If you like character driven science fiction set in outer space then this is a great read. If you do not, then you probably will not enjoy this.
