In the Quick is like a mix of The Martian and The Queen's Gambit but infuriating at times and unsatisfying.

3 stars because it was well researched and a quick read but dang did it make me so. mad.

What I felt the book did wrong:
- Pacing. Stuff would happen! Exciting things! And then we'd derail and follow a much less interesting issue and the Interesting Thing would just. Go away.
- Love story??? No. It was not and James was unhinged. June!!! You can do so much better than him!!! (And the LGBT thing is so upsetting. I think that's why I had it on my to-read list in the first place and it's negligible.)
- It's less like June makes things happen, and more like things happen to June. It's annoying, especially since she's written as this infallible, incredibly strong character.
- Ok. So. June works so hard. Her whole life, listening to static and figuring out that the Inquiry's crew is alive. She almost DIES recording the receptacle noise. And then Anu just? Calls in. 7 years after the communications fail. She just calls NSP and is like "oh hey yeah its me, Anu, can you send a crew or something? Oh, a girl is trying to prove we're alive? Cool, whatever."

What I think the book did well:
- Space.
- Making things terrifying and ominous. Glass in her EYE. The terrible loneliness of being stranded in the middle of nowhere.

So. I wish this book would take all the cool space stuff and make it more interesting. I wish June had convinced everyone that Inquiry was alive, and set up communications herself. I wish we'd gotten to see June meet Inquiry's crew. But, alas. That is not this book.
