I wasn't 100% certain when starting this, but it was spooky season at the time and I wanted to try out my first monster/fantasy/paranormal romances that month.
And I can happily say, I really enjoyed this!

As I'm learning, it's important in the romance genre not to judge books by their covers because I was expecting pure smut, just... with orcs, but it wasn't that at all!
(I mean... they got down... But there was a LOT more going on in this book outside of that)

Admittedly this book won't be for everyone (which I think can often be the case in monster romances).
But it definitely WAS for me!!

My goodness.

I certainly wasn't expecting to read an orc romance that also somehow manages to discuss abortion laws and a woman's right to make their own choice about their body! It was so interesting to see how Finley Fenn wove that narrative throughout the story. (Edit: Having now read some of the earlier books in the series you can really see Finley's writing style develop and improve. Also how the universe this story is told in develops).

I occasionally found the 'I do trust him, I don' t trust him, I do trust him again' a little repetitive. However it didn't impact my enjoyment of the book, plus It's a fairly standard practice for the romance genre!
Aaaand the heroine was in a pretty bananas situation, so I feel like it was fair to be overwhelmed 😂

I left this book definitely wanting to read more of the series and planning to start at the very beginning.

When it does get steamy... Good lord.
But don't go into this expecting your usual rom com steamy scene.
Orcs have a whole heap of other stuff going on 😐 - as I said it definitely won't be for everyone. But I found it interesting reading something a bit different!

This book was so engaging but so terrifyingly intense. I didn't even feel like I could breathe til I was nearly 90% of the way through. This is sooooo emotionally taxing.
