This is very much a book of two halves. The first six chapters are a masterclass in horror and in building tension, but from that stage things start to drag and the tale loses its focus. There are so many inconsistencies and unexplained plot points in amongst the characters' self-pitying and navel-gazing. What really put me off in the second part of the story was the casual misogyny, arrogance and xenophobia. I know that this was par for the course in the 1890s but today it makes for uncomfortable reading.
Where this novel excels is in achieving two landmarks; it is the one of the earliest, but certainly the best, examples of 'found footage' and it is the origin story for one of the most recognised characters in all fiction. Dracula is now so well-known that he even has his own emoji!
It's worth reading just so that you can see how Dracula began (and how he has evolved from this beginning), but I would only recommend re-reading the first six chapters. Saying that, I could happily read those six chapters time and again.

The first couple chapters with Jonathan’s POV is fun and spooky! The rest is decent but pales a bit in comparison with the opening. Really, at its core, this book is about people who are really horny for each other (in an erotic way, a platonic way, a “no homo” way, predator/prey, you name it), and I can appreciate that 👍
