I have always been a sucker for a good mystery. As a kid, I loved finding the most obscure kid's mystery books (no Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys for me) and seeing how quickly I could solve them. Bonus points if it happened before the halfway point. As an adult, this has become nearly a toxic trait because I see things coming from a mile away. Usually, even with mystery books, I'm disappointed when I realize that I've discovered all of the plot twists before they happen. This is even the case when I'm watching TV shows (again, bless my dear husband who has to listen to me tell him my predictions, which often ruins whatever we watch because I'm typically right - oops) and it becomes quite irritating after a while. I just want something to surprise me!
The Inheritance Games surprised me - over and over and over again. There weren't necessarily jaw-dropping moments where I thought, "OMG IT WAS THEM?!" so much as subtle twists and turns that kept me on my toes. It was so satisfying to read, predict, and then be swept away towards another direction, only to be pleasantly surprised when that earlier detail came back up again in a way that was unexpected. I had a tough time putting the book down for this exact reason!
I loved the different characters in this. You really never know who to trust, who's to blame, and what the motives are for any character at any given time and that is such fun. I certainly have my favorites (Xander and Libby) but it'll be interesting to see how everyone develops over the rest of the series.
Do yourself a favor and read this book ASAP because it really is that good (in case my earlier pronouncement of this wasn't enough).

“Do you know what philanthropist means?” Libby asked me seriously. “It means rich.”
This book is written in short chapters with twist and turns on every page. This book is perfect for a busy life with little time to really sit down, or a good train read. Personally I like to read my books in a few sits and the short chapters and quick scene changes started to feel a little bit too all over the place.
- Though this book is part of a trilogy and there is some set up for the next book, the ending does leave you satisfied.
I wouldn’t exactly call this a good book, nothing memorable or life changing happened and the only thing I highlighted is the quote above, but it kept me reading and I thought it was clever.

I don’t know why the marketing and cover make it seem more like a Hunger Games type situation, but this is more of a scavenger hunt deal. I vibed with it, I just don’t want anyone to go into it expecting something different.
-This was fun and fast paced!
-unnecessary love triangle… I honestly wouldn’t take this book too seriously in that area though. Like it’s good because the plot is fun and all but there’s this like thing with jealous guys trying to show dominance or whatever which is very juvenile. Takes me back to early YA books.
-Bi side character, wlw relationship mentioned briefly. There are people of color, but they’re mostly side characters from what I remember
-there a point where a character talks about how charities are better than helping out individual people and yada yada yada. He’s a white cishet man and he grew up rich. Of course he thinks that way. This is just a person opinion of mine so you can take it with a grain of salt, but from what I’ve heard from marginalized people, donating to individuals *IS* better than donating to large charity groups. But I guess I should be happy they donated the fictional money in the first place lol
CW:
-there is a toxic relationship with mental and physical abuse
-also attempted murder twice
-there’s a character with a terminal illness and it shows how
Moderate: Physical abuse, Terminal illness, Gun violence, and Emotional abuse
