The world-building was a bit slow in the beginning, but once our characters’ stories started intersecting, the book moved so quickly. Inan’s character was a bit confusing to me (though I think he is also just confused generally), but I loved watching Amari & Zélie’s growth and relationship development.
Also, the complexities of revolution against oppression were present in the characters’ struggles and conversations, which inspired me to consider these same complexities in reality. I want to know more about this world, and I want to know what happens next!

1. Please read the authors note, if you've read the story. 
2. This was fascinating, the story and it's characters took so many turns in their character development. It all made sense though. There was a lot of hurt and grief in a few days storyline. The characters also had noticeable trauma, and all handled it differently, which is very good writing, because I've also read books where that was completely disregarded. So all in all worth the read, I think it's better to read it not spread out over months though.

Living in a world that hates what her bloodline could be and taxes her very existence, Zélie find herself in an epic adventure that could change not only her life but the lives of every potential Magi in Orisha. Tomi Adeyemi weaves real world emotion and pain seamlessly into her beautifully crafted fantastical world with such heart and soul that I found my own breaking while empathising with the deep, rich characters. I’m Interested to see where they end up next.

The worldbuilding is unlike ANY I've seen before and I mainly just read fantasy stories. The characters feel so real and I cried because of their pain and strength. Slightly uncomfortable with how Roën's eyes are described, but that may be a mistranslation (read the Dutch version). Slight spoiler: The ending and plottwists felt too sudden for me, but there's still part two.

The book is written by a POC author and almost all of the cast has browm skin but between the different folks there is a lot of colorism and hatred. It taught me a lot and made me realise I could never fully understand that pain. It is very emotional but very important to the story and handled well.
