i really have to stop reading fantasy while knowing i don't like it and i'll inevitably give the books not that great of a rating because i don't like fantasy but o well (3 stars for the beautiful writing tho)

It's just not for me! I keep trying to force myself to get into it, but I'm just not into it.

Harry Potter like. Good, but not my thing. If you're into fantasy books, I think it's a good representation of the best the genre has to offer. Just not my cup of tea.

West African inspired fantasy with lots of magic, and racism/colorism. I liked the worldbuilding, but I'm kind of grumpy about the ending. I also would have liked this book more if Amari and Zélie were the canon ship, but we can't have everything.

Whew that was a fun read. There were a number of predictable plot devices/tropes at the beginning. The second half is worth it, though, with a little more world building and less predictable character choices. The ending had me in tears. Definitely recommend and can’t wait for the sequel in a few months.

Excellent writing and storytelling. I loved the fantasy African culture. Parts reminded me of the recent movie, Black Panther, especially the bad ass females, festivity associated with rituals, and fighting with a staff.
