Very good I have read many historical fiction around nazi Germany but this one brought out many tears

Malditos escritores clichés que se cargan a los pocos personajes que verdaderamente merecen la pena. Y malditos triángulos amorosos tan predecibles. Con menos amoríos, creo que me habría gustado mil veces más. Realmente ni siquiera eran necesarios. El estilo tampoco me ha entusiasmado, pero he de reconocer que me la he bebido. Aunque Amos no me haya gustado nada de nada. Y DANIEL. REPITO, PODEMOS HABLAR DE DANIEL.

Unfassbar gutes Buch, eins der Besten zum Thema und hinterlässt einen bleibenden Eindruck. Sowas sollte in der Schule gelesen werden.
Auch wenn ich schon viel zum Thema gelesen, gehört und gesehen habe, haben die Schilderungen mich mitgenommen. Nichts wird beschönigt oder ausgelassen und es ist eine besondere Geschichte, authentisch und ergreifend.
Mira ist eine unfassbar beeindruckende, mutige Protagonistin und man ist direkt mittendrin in ihrem Leben, im Warschauer Ghetto 1942. Ihr Vater hat sich umgebracht, ihr egoistischer Bruder hat sich der Judenpolizei angeschlossen und die 16-Jährige Mira schmuggelt, um sich, ihre kleine Schwester Hannah und ihre apathische Mutter durchzubringen.
Als sie fast erwischt wird, rettet Amos ihr das Leben. Da weiß sie noch nicht, dass er Teil des Widerstands ist, der 28 Tage den Nazis standhalten kann.
Ihr Freund Daniel, will die Kinder aus dem Waisenhaus, mit denen er aufgewachsen ist nicht verlassen, auch wenn das sein Ende bedeutet. Ihre Mutter, ihre beste Freundin, ihre kleine Schwester, alle weg.
Nur Hannahs Geschichte von 777 magischen Inseln kann sie etwas trösten, als alles zerfällt. Und der Widerstand, dem sie sich anschließt, nachdem das Warschauer Ghetto systematisch aufgelöst wird.
Die Juden, die sich einfach in Konzentrationslager treiben ließen, die, die sich nicht von ihren Familien trennen wollten, die, die ihre Kinder an Nazis weggeben haben, in der Hoffnung sich zu retten aber auch die Zwangsarbeiter, die hofften sie seien als billige Arbeitskräfte sicher und auch die jüdischen Opfer die zu Tätern wurden - am Ende wurden alle deportiert.
Die Geschichte wird immer aufreibender aber ich fand den Teil vor dem Widerstand bewegender. Das Ende ist mir dann fast schon zu geschönt - und dann erfährt man, dass Mira fiktiv ist, ihre Geschichte aber nicht. Das macht es dann noch heftiger.
Die Frage nach dem Gewissen und wozu Menschen fähig sind, die unmenschliche Brutalität, das unfassbare Leid, die schockierenden Ereignisse aber auch die Kritik an Verrat und Intrigen und Miras bewegende Überlebensgeschichte machen das Buch besonders. Es weckt Emotionen und man leidet, hasst und fiebert mit.

No me esperaba a este autor escribiendo un género tan distinto a lo que suelo leer de él y me encantó. Lo leí en inglés y fue alucinante lo rápido que lo acabé, ya que la historia te engancha desde el minuto cero y te mete 100% en lo que está contando. Muy recomendable!

Revolution to survive.
This novel is an important read. While fictional, the aspects of this story are real to what happened during WW2 and migrations of ghettos into concentration camps. We meet the main character, Mira, early on and see that she is doing what ever she can to survive, even if that means being a thief. At first everything appears to be calm, albeit a bit overwhelming and threatening in her home. When soldiers start removing families, Mira tries to protect her family the only way she knows how by joining the resistance.
The book is dense, there is a lot there. But its not only dense in that regard but it holds so much information and "personality" about the people living this experience. This is not a glorification of the holocaust, nor is this an extremely grim telling of the events of WW2. The story follows a teen trying to survive and I felt Mira's pain and anguish throughout the novel.
This is a translation of the original text, but was done wonderfully. I really appreciated that words that don't translate well instead of using a different word, the author/translator explained the word and then continued using the native word.
This haunting tale is worth the read and should be read and digested. The 3.75 rating is because of the denseness of the text, and extremely slow nature of the book. The entire book covers 30-40 days but moves slow enough to feel as if it is written over a year. However the message is important and this historical fiction is wonderful which is why it was closer to a 4/5.
