I loved the old-timey, good ol' boys feel to this book.
The story takes place in the 19th century on the American frontier. I absolutely love the time period. Awesome alternate history fantasy!
There's a huge theme of Christian religion versus folk magic.
This book had the most biblical references I've ever read in any fiction book, but it is not a Christian book.
I enjoyed the characters. They were well developed. My favorite was a man named Taleswapper. He is so reflective and loaded with proverbs.
I think I might continue on in the series. It's nothing I'm in a rush for, but it's TBR worthy.

Seventh Son (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 1) by Orson Scott Card (1993)
It was interesting, but not my favorite Orson Scott Card book I've ever read. Knowing the Mormon symbolism behind the story made it worth reading, but I don't know if I will continue with the series.
read this as a kid, so it's kinda nostalgic. it's a good enough and interesting book for sure, definitely a really cool premise that I'm unsure I've ever seen elsewhere. but I can't say that I'm aching to recommend it to anyone.
slow-paced
Ben Franklin is a wizard that can pull lightning out of the sky...whaaat? George Washington was beheaded for treason...whaaat? Thomas Jefferson impregnated lots and lots of slave girls...whaaat?...no wait that one is real. A story about an alternative America that was founded on religious freedom that involved a little magic mixed in. Less than spectacular and not very much excitement but well written and still interesting. There was no ending to the story. It just ran out of pages

I have been a Orson Scott Card fan since the Ender series (I think I still have a few to go in that series) so picked this up just based on his name. Now I am not one who researches books based on series and then picks them up, I just pick them as they become available and usually finishing the first book realize its a series. This was just another such case, but I am now excited to have one more series I can read through. Just made my day.
