I think I’m on a high school/college romance kick.
So Ruthless Monster is more of a bully romantic suspense. There are dark themes but I wouldn’t say it’s AS dark as I thought it might be, and its not as if there’s an undercurrent through the book - it’s more fleeting.
Rome can’t stand his new step-sister Elodie who is as sweet as all get-out. She inadvertently ‘ruins’ Rome’s life .. in as much as an 18yo thinks his life is ruined, so he sets about making her pay by basically being a Class A Dickhead. Add the fact that Elodie is new to town and still settling in, there’s alot of drama and angst in store as Rome takes back what he’s “owed”.
For mind this book tends towards more suspense than dark as there’s a mystery element underpinning the story. This and the romance element outweigh the dark elements IMO so it’s less edgy the more you read on.
There are trigger warnings at the outset and an event where an assault occurs on page early in the book that sets the scene for what unfolds, so if readers have sensitivity to storylines like that, exercise self care.
I could see heaps of potential for future books from this one.

Oh boy!! The banter and hatred between both Rome and Elodie was unmatched!
Rome aka MR. Popular had flirted with Elodie and she didn’t like his pompous ass so she pushed him into a pool and thats what started it all.
Elodie was walking on the wrong side of the town and ran into the wrong people resulting with her getting into trouble. Her knight in shining armor showed up to save her. She ran away and made a call to the cops thinking she was helping him. She thought wrong.
NOW THE SPICE 🫠🥵😮💨 HOT DAMN!!!
It's a must read

Oh, how I loved the angst in Rome & Elodie's story! Rachel, once again, you did not leave me disappointed with the bully/enemies-to-lovers trope. I gobbled Heartless Monster up like popcorn and could not put it down! I found both Rome & Elodie likeable characters, and Rome was not so crazy that I could still find him redeemable at the end.
If you are a fan of the step-sibling trope with some sports romance flavour, I highly recommend Heartless Monster—a spicy, quick and enjoyable read for dark romance fans. I am giving a rating of 4.5 / 5 Stars.
