Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy. This is my second book that I have read by Catherine Ryan Hyde. It was a quick easy read with some heavier topics. The story follows Ru, a thirteen year old who is quite intelligent. As she is attending University, she meets Gabriel who becomes more of a friend. Ru’s life changes in a few short weeks, which leads to her and Gabriel going on an adventure. Hyde wrote the book in an interesting perspective with Ru telling the adventures as a story to two unnamed characters. I would have liked a little more backstory to those characters but overall it was an enjoyable read.

Round up to 4 1/2 stars.
What a gem from Catherine Ryan Hyde. Two young people - one “freakishly” smart, one non-binary, form an incredible bond and set off on an adventure, A beautifully written story with so much insight into the hearts and mind of these young people. Well written and researched, of course, filled with wonderful characters and New-to-me knowledge that is seamlessly woven into the story.

Always a delight to read a book from this author.

Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC. Opinions are my own.

A good look into how a brilliant unemotional mind deals with loss. I wish I could have tagged along on the journey!  I especially liked their resourcefulness and the simplicity of their relationship. There was one bit toward the end that felt like it was there just to check the inclusion box and it was unnecessary.

I listened to the audiobook for this one.
This book is beautifully written! Such a wonderful, adventurous, fun, and inspiring, coming to age story.
A real page turner that I couldn’t wait to come back to.
I felt like this was just filled with life lessons for all of us but especially those of us struggling in the real world to understand what “life” is to us. I’m sure there are many people who can relate to the grief this main character goes through and this book is one of those books that helps you through it and see it from an angle you may not have before.

Lovely touching book, loved the character who just happened to be nonbinary but that wasn’t a defining characteristic.  Loved the expression of considering themselves to be in a herd, meaning bonded and trusting.  Not lovers or just friends, but wordlessly connected.
