I feel like I should have liked this more. Butler is brilliant and so ahead of her time, but this story did not grab me the way Kindred did. It’s a me problem for sure!

“My God doesn’t love me or hate me or watch over me or know me at all, and I feel no love for or loyalty to my God. My God just is.”

This novel is a dark dystopian classic, with a flawed yet lovable cast of characters on a seemingly hopeless journey, but there is a seed of hope and it is yours to shape. This will be one of those reads I'll need to sit with for a while. While I read it all in one day, I know I will eventually return and re-read this marvelous and deeply personal tale of human resilience and the need for change. God is Change after all ;) It feels very timely to read this on the verge of yet another American election and as the world seems to spiral out of control continuously, maybe I do need to shape the change, perhaps we all do. Even if it isn't perfect, these Earthseed ideas seem genuinely helpful.

The prophetess energy wasn’t really my favorite as the book went on. I enjoyed the earlier world building. The violence was very difficult to engage with.

Reading this book in July 2024 was a little harrowing. Lauren Olamina is a protagonist I find fascinating. She’s judgmental but kind, heretical but faithful, anxious but trusting. She’s a complex young women navigating a world full of horror— though I’m fascinated by the stark contrast of the sinister populace versus her more idealistic inner circle (a trend that continues even after her walls are torn down). First half of the book was excellent, and I was completely immersed. Second half felt repetitive. I was waiting for either connection or development between the setting, her “sharing” and her faith, but these things continued to feel disconnected. Curious about the next book though!
