I work in an academic library, so when I saw that this was about a murder that takes place in one, I knew I had to read it. It's great introduction to John Sandford novels.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I should: while I love the Lucas Davenport novels with a passion, the Virgil Flowers series has always struck me as a more light-hearted set of novels. In this one, a surgeon has been murdered and Flowers is put on the case. But things don’t start falling into place until they realise that the clues remind them of something else...
This was a little bit gimmicky and written with the tongue firmly in the cheek. Many of Mr Sandford’s books take a piece of pop culture and use it for dramatic effect, like a previous Virgil novel in which a professor of archaeology named Jones steals a religious artefact from a dig, but this one was at least a genuine mystery with a real sense of tension. The obligatory chase scene at the end was really the only part that felt out of place here. And it was nice to get some parts played by some well-established supporting characters like Capslock, Jenkins and Shrake.
Good fun.

While it's always good to catch up with Virgil Flowers, I found the resolution to this story a little ridiculous. I enjoyed the chase, but the explanation of what motivated the killer and the clues that were spread along the way seemed a bit of a reach. Still, I will anxiously await Virgil's next adventure!
