Kari Stuart stops in at a store to buy some cat litter and impulsively buys a lottery ticket. She wins. Now what is she going to do with her life? She continues to work at the diner and lives in her crummy apartment while trying to decide. Then she manages to capture a kitten that has been running around the apartment building and takes it to the local shelter who tell her they cannot take any more kittens - they are more than full. The woman at the shelter adds that it's too bad the woman running a rescue is having to shut down for lack of funds. So Kari decides to do something about it. She goes to the real estate agent and buys the rescue. Next she goes to the rescue with her kitten and walks in to a scene of distress. The animal warden is threatening to impound a dog he claims got out and bit someone and given them another ticket for the dog being loose. They are sure the dog has done nothing, but the woman who started the rescue is afraid "the crazy lady who bought it" will change her mind. Kari reveals herself as the crazy lady and begins to try to learn from the former owner and her staff of volunteers what is being done, what is needed and how the whole business works. Fortunately, Kari won a LOT of money in the lottery because the animal warden is pouring on the problems and then is found dead behind the rescue - by Kari and her kitten, Queenie (short for Queen Nefertiti). Fortunately, there is an old farm house next to the rescue that comes with it so she has a new place to live for herself and her personal rescues. As improvements begin, vandalism starts and she is threatened by a deputy. It just gets deeper because the sheriff is not pleased by her interference. She's just trying to prove she's not really a suspect, nor is the former owner. But it's getting difficult.

[I received a free electronic review copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.]

5 stars = Outstanding!

I adored this! The premise of a lottery winner pursuing her passion project is a great fit for me - I love the wish-fulfillment of that set up. The characters in this were fantastic - especially Kari and Queenie the kitten. (Well, one of the core group was infuriating - her hot and cold attitude about Kari was annoying to the point of hoping she turned out to be the killer so she would go away.) I enjoyed Kari's drive to stand up to bullies and her compassion for the animals in her care. There are a couple potential love interests for future books. And the mystery is exceptionally good, with layers that are solved over time, which made me feel like I really got my "money's worth" out of the book.

One of the biggest selling points to me, though, was when Kari used healthy boundaries with her brother. That may sound weird, but I have seen too many books where the main character is manipulated and bullied by family. It can be a real distraction for me as a reader. I'm hyper sensitive to it. But Kari is welcoming and loving while still having healthy limits, and I loved her all the more because of it.

This is now a must-read series for me.

Fantastic furry cozy mystery set in an animal rescue sanctuary. It is delightful and struck all the right notes with me. Great animals, distinct likeable characters, and the victim was not beloved or missed.

I personally believe that the first book of a cozy mystery series isn't the best, Which is why I'm so excited about the next book of this series.

The premise is amazing. It's so fresh and fun. The animal shelter setting is also great. I love the set up of the series. The mystery.. not so much.

I enjoyed this, but I think I'll enjoy the next book more.
