Cute, but less believable than all my fantasy romance books combined.
Irresponsible woman with a compulsive lying problem and a crippling addiction to shopping manages to get the guy (who also sucks) and solve all her financial problems by being extremely lucky, while ultimately learning nothing.

I watched the film adaptation when I was around 12, and I really loved it, so when I saw the book at my library I had to pick it up. They are SO very different from each other, to the point that you can barely recognize that they're connected. That being said, I still like both of them for different reasons. The movie was more of a fun, airy rom-com, the book also carried a couple of these things, but I didn't find it quite that funny. This versions also stressed me out way more lolol. Overall a pretty good novel, I might continue the series to see what else it has to offer.

I’m honestly really surprised that this is the most well-known work of Sophie Kinsella’s and the one that was turned into a film. I enjoy Kinsella’s breezy narration and easy reads, but this plotless exploit of a shopping addict left me bored.

Partiamo dal presupposto che prendo questo libro per quello che è, un chick lit, e che non rientra propriamente nel mio genere.
Detto questo, è stata una lettura piacevole; veloce e leggera, ma comunque interessante e in parte divertente (anche se meno di quanto pensassi).
Rebecca Bloomwood è una malata di shopping compulsivo. Sempre al verde e col conto in rosso, ma incapace di resistere alle vetrine sfavillanti, alle calde luci e al profumo avvolgente dei negozi e alla sensazione di pace interiore che lo shopping le provoca. Rebecca è tutto questo, ma è anche... Una delle protagoniste più snervanti che abbia mai incontrato in un libro! La sua stupidità e l'idiozia di certi suoi ragionamenti sono paragonabili a quelli di una bambina di otto anni che da grande sogna di fare la principessa. Ogni tanto se ne viene fuori con certe cose talmente insulse che mi veniva voglia di darle uno schiaffo per farla svegliare. Nonostante questo, però, è così semplice e ingenua che, in fondo, quasi involontariamente, l'irritazione che provoca viene mitigata da un senso di tenerezza nei suoi confronti che è impossibile non provare. Per questo, alla fine, si tifa per lei.
Rebecca ha un modo semplice per sfuggire alla crudeltà del mondo reale: ignorarlo. Le pile di lettere minatorie delle banche? Mai arrivate. Perché aprirle? Perché anche solo pensarci? Ho odiato la protagonista quando si comportava così. Poi però ci ho riflettuto un momento, e mi sono resa conto che, in questo, ero identica a lei. A volte mi capita di comportarmi esattamente nello stesso modo, ignorando le cose che mi preoccupano solo perché "ho imparato che il trucco è semplicemente quello di non ascoltare. Isolo il fondo della mia mente e più niente mi preoccupa". E allora ho odiato la protagonista un po' di meno, odiando me stessa un po' di più.
Comunque, al di là della protagonista fastidiosa (ma non sempre), il libro scorre rapido; lo stile di Kinsella è decisamente semplice (in realtà anche un po' troppo) e il libro si legge in fretta. La storia è a tratti un po' troppo surreale ed ingenua, nel senso che nel mondo reale certe cose non potrebbero succedere davvero, ma in fondo il libro vuole essere leggero e spensierato, no? E in questo, devo ammettere, ci riesce benissimo.
(Le stelline sono in realtà 2.5)

Sophie Kinsella is my go to author if I want a fast, easy read, and this did not disappoint in that department, but Becky is a bit annoying to me, and I didn't relate to her at all. I also didn't see any chemistry in the romantic interest. I like Sophie's stand alone books better, but I may continue the series if I need another light pick me up.

It started a bit slow for me, but by the end I was hooked. It's a good typical chick lit book, and a good deviation from the last few books I've read. I'm sure eventually I will end up reading the other books in the series, it might take me a while, but I'll read them at some point!

Giving this 3 stars because I think the middle of the book is a bit of a chore, but the climax and denouement were well done. This book draws you into its protagonist right away. I like how the author treats a character who could easily feel like a shallow stereotype with care and respect. I’m left wanting more and looking forward to reading the next book.
