That's another Grady Hendrix book down and what a ride!
I typically don't like possession stories, but this one intrigued me. I am really glad I read it!
The 80s vibe of this whole book was amazing, Hendrix really got the feel of the 80s throughout the whole book, the music, media, the trends... Everything was amazing. One thing though, I understand this was set in the 80s, but some language choices I felt was unnecessary.
I enjoyed the overall story, whilst is was a little slow in the beginning, when it got going it was so good and fun! As I mentioned, I am not a big possession story fan, but this had a good build to it, seeing a possessed Gretchen was doing to her friends and the fallout. That tapeworm scene was gnarly. The exorcism scene was pretty immense too.
I enjoyed the friendship between Abby and Gretchen, I loved how it ended and how it explained how friendships are complicated. That people drift apart, but still hold a presence in your life and still sometimes pick up where you left off, no drama and no malice, like not time passed at all. I thought it was beautiful.
Only got two more Hendrix books to devour, I cannot wait!

El título es suficientemente indicativo de que va. Con lo que voy a decir que lo he disfrutado mucho. La prosa de Hendrix te atrapa y no te suelta.

This book had potential, but then it ultimately felt...super aggravating. This felt like a PG-13 version of the Exorcist, filtered through Ready Player One, with the smallest dash of Needful Things. Plus the characters got on my nerves, I didn’t really get any answers, and the ending was pretty dumb. Also, what was up with the one random chapter the suddenly had multiple choice questions acting as paragraph breaks? Or the other one-off chapter that suddenly shows what one of the girls is eating as paragraph breaks? Why was any of that necessary? After hearing all the praise for this, I expected so much more — at the very least, something that made just a bit more sense.

This was such an amusing and dark story all at once. I liked the twists on an exorcism that the girls dealt with, and how they handled life after all of that crazy. There were some amusing pokes at Christianity and hyper-religious folks in general that were amusing.
But on the other end, it was creepily accurate, with small town drama, and those strict adults that just want children to fall into these perfect boxes and assume they are acting out or being willful when they are just trying to find an adult to help with serious problems. Plus the fear over drugs and Satanism of that time. Ugh. It just goes to show how much can happen in a community when people are focused on the wrong things and ignore everything else.

I picked this up to read something scary in Spooktober, as I had seen it mentioned across Reddit, and I swallowed it in a matter of days. I loved the 80s vibe and movie+music references and I got really invested in the relationship between the main characters. the relatively peaceful parts of their friendship growing might have been my favourite part. Grady Hendrix does a really got job of describing the thoughts and feelings of both a kid and a teenage girl in a believable way, even when they make decisions you as the reader might not agree with.
The build up to the climax is good, and a lot of the stuff is really creepy even though I didn't find it downright scary. There's a couple fun twists and turns and the ending is satisfying.
Part of me wanted to give the book three or four stars only, since it has some cliche parts, gets a little cheesy and a bit YA, but I had to admit to myself that I was very invested in the story and couldn't wait to finish it. Five stars! :D

Det här är tyvärr bara tråkigt. Jag fastnar inte alls för varken Abby eller Gretchen. Så jag ger upp efter 38 sidor (= 11 %).
