read this concurrently with [b:The Trial|17690|The Trial|Franz Kafka|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320399438l/17690._SY75_.jpg|2965832] which actually worked super well because 1. they both have that surreal-to-the-point-of-comedy feeling to them, although this one has a bit more of a cohesive plot, and 2. they're both narrated by just like sweaty pathetic desperate men, which seems to be both kafka and dostoevsky's specialty? and you know what, i enjoy it! this was just really enjoyable and of course really excellently written and by the time i got to the halfway mark, i couldn't put it down. it's like watching a train wreck over and over again, these people are all just making the worst possible choices and it's impossible to stop reading. i did really love how despite the chaos, the plot unfolds in a really structured, cohesive way; it felt like putting a puzzle together as you uncover the characters' connections and secret motivations. and of course my favorite character was the irritable old russian grandma who yells at everyone and then gambles her fortune away in two days. rest in peace queen!!
really fun and really good, if you want to get into dostoevsky but are intimidated by the size of c&p/brothers karamazov etc (as i am! still haven't read them lol), definitely try this one or [b:Notes from Underground|49455|Notes from Underground|Fyodor Dostoevsky|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1657562670l/49455._SY75_.jpg|50717723].

Was originally reading it for a college project, but yk what, I really did love it. Sure it has some boring parts, but mostly it was great

I wish his short books were as good as his longer ones. This one just didn't hit the spot.

my first and certainly not my last day with Dostoyevsky...

It is no secret that Dostoevsky was addicted to gambling, most likely because of this his novel "The Roulette Player" is autobiographical in nature. The main plot line in the novel is the passion for gambling, but Dostoevsky examines in detail a number of other human passions such as lust, money and power.
