It was a good book and beautifully written but I didn't feel the urge to pick it up and I found it equally easy to put it back down again. Maybe I read it at the wrong time but even though I wanted to love it it just didn't click.

This was a difficult but important read. I didn't have much knowledge about what occurred during Belgium's invasion of the Congo. This is an alternate history where the people living in the Congo rise up against Leopold. But it still recognizes the complex realities of colonialism and post-colonialism. The way the truth of history constantly shone through was engaging and startling.

The premise was awesome. I normally really enjoy alternative historicals but the main story thread in Everfair was hard to follow. Each chapter was a vignette that followed one of the many characters. Each chapter moved forward in time either by months or even years. So I’d be following along with one character and then they’d be gone for several chapters. Overall it felt like it was chopped out of a larger, more complete body of work.

I wanted to like this more than i did. it felt like a trilogy smushed into a single novel. i didn’t spend enough time with each character to know them well, so i didn’t care much what happened to them. the book glossed over a lot of character & story development i would have wanted to see in order to rush through 3 distinct periods of everfair’s history. i just don’t like this structure much.

It was way too slow. Part of me wanted to push through but maybe I’m just not ready to read this one just yet. I may try it again later this year.

Too slow for me. Maybe when I am in a better place and can keep up but it was not the book to listen to while working.

As the back of the book says, this is a speculative masterpiece. I am blown away by the story’s cohesiveness while being an alternate history story, being told from a dozen+ perspectives, and taking place across decades. Nisi’s vision and command of character building is incredible. I loved loved how much they did to build understanding of character’s actions/choices while not at all excusing those actions/choices. Brilliant!
