As always, I love Beverley Nichols' sly humour and intimate descriptions of his adventures in rehabilitating home and garden.

A British post-war gardening memoir? Yes, please! This book was clever, often hilarious, and sometimes misogynistic. It made me wish that I (1) lived on a grand estate outside London and (2) had the desire and inclination that Mr Nichols has to carve out a piece of paradise.

Charming read! I loved his writing and his love of nature and making a home.

While this was uber-charming and entertaining despite the focus on gardening (not an interest of mine), it wasn't what I was in the mood for, so I'm putting it aside for now.

Ah, how lovely! And funny! This was a bit like reading a book by the love child of Forster and Von Arnim. Really enjoyed it. And I don't even like gardening all that much.

A memoir of Nichols’ house and garden. It’s written in a kind of arch, self-aware tone that I found amusing but which could just as easily have made me put the book down in annoyance. Still, if you’re in the right frame of mind, this is an enjoyable record of the tribulations of the inhabitants of Merry Hall.
