"What could be madder than a woman who wanted to be more than just a wife?"
Fascinating deep-dive into the story of Elizabeth Packard, a woman sentenced to an insane asylum simply because her educated opinions started to inconvenience her husband. Once a wife, mother of six, and popular and well-respected member of her community, Elizabeth had her liberties stripped from her and was sentenced to living under lock and key away from family and community.
Regardless of this seemingly insurmountable hurdle thrown at her, Elizabeth's story is one of perseverance and altruistic bravery and forgivness. She not only fought for her own freedom, but also defended and freed the many women she got to known within the asylum system. Elizabeth went on to fight her case in court, both to be declared sane as well as to later reform the entire system and fight for women's rights. She became a celebrated author, returned to the her cherished role of mother to her children, and lived a long and incredibly productive life. 4.5 stars rounded up, highly recommended read.

This was a great book. It was hard to read at times due to the horrors that Elizabeth Packard had to go through but well worth it. She was ahead of her time and we all owe her deep gratitude.
