The premise of the was good and it was well written there was just something about it that just dragged a little slow for me

‘Maybe that was what true love meant: a bitterness that stayed on the tongue when everything else faded.’

This was an interesting idea for a story but I didn't connect with it.  The pacing was erratic and the MC could be indecisive and often just let things happen.  It was a unique snap shot of a family and introduced me to some interesting religious lore.  It's contrast and in some cases correlation with Christianity provided a rich backdrop for the story to unfold.  Not a bad story for sure, just not for me.

wonderful exploration of trauma, compassion and identity. a review on the back of the book by karen lord says “black water sister is both ode and accusation to all the ties that bind- to family, duty, and home”. this is a perfect summary of the theme of this book. loved it

It isn't often a pick up a contemporary fantasy, and it's even less often I find one so truly enjoyable. Cho's prose has a natural unassuming quality that delivered like a blow to the gut- what a delicately executed tale of generational trauma.

I really liked the premise, the writing style, and a bit of the side eye comments related to white people or sexism, but I think the plot kind of lost its flow in the middle and it just ended up being a meh ending
