Cara Hunter

4 stars - a brilliant thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end. Cara Hunter has created some great characters in this series, displaying real emotion but still able to keep it sympathetic which is something that is very hard to do. I loved reading about Adam and how his team solve this crime, and I have to admit that I didn't see it coming. I was truly led down the garden path with this book.

The plot was well thought out, and there were a couple of times where I thought "well, what about..." only for a character to cover it a few pages later. The fact that the reader was able to be one step ahead of the detective until the end was done well and didn't last too long and it was good to see the thought processes around the solving of the crime. I also thought the ending was phenomenal and gave me real chills when I put the book down, so much so I had to wait until this morning to pick up my next read.

My only issue with this book is the amount of graphic detail we get, especially at the end when the big reveal is happening. It isn't pleasant to read and should carry a number of trigger warnings. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read another by this author.

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

This second instalment in the DI Adam Fawley series begins with a horrifying discovery when a young woman and child are found near to death in the cellar of a man suffering from dementia. It appears the pair have been held captive in this cellar for a long time leaving them traumatised so much so that the woman is unable to speak to anyone and appears to want nothing to do with her own child.

I have been loving police procedurals this year and this series is one of the best. I can usually make some guesses as to where the ending might go but I can honestly say that I had no idea where this one was going! There were so many great twists and turns throughout. Even after just reading the first two books this series had already been firmly cemented amongst my favourites.
