Haunting of the hill took me by surprise. Four people, including a Dr Montague, Luke, Theodora, and Eleanor, come to the hill house to take records of the haunting happening there, and have their lives changed.
I've heard many people rave about the horror that this book presents. And they were not completely wrong. This is my first horror, and I expected it to have ghosts or something sinister lurking in the pages, what I found was even scarier. There is psychological horror present in the plot of this book, and the main character here is definitely the hill house.
"Hill House itself, not sane, stood against its hills, holding darkness within"
The hill house has a certain tragic history. The hill house is presented as a being of its own, that has will and control to do things and make other people do things.
The part where we do not know the truth of what is actually happening, but still knowing what is happening is the true haunting. Reading this book at different times is a different experience. Whenever I read it at night, it was very scary, like something is running up and down your spine, like the whole room is chilled so suddenly. But reading it in the day does not give the similar experience with horror. I like to believe it's the work of the hill house itself.
I loved the unpredictability this book presented. The way the hill house chooses one of them to slowly break apart and make them its own. Writing style of Shirley Jackson is absolutely beautiful. And I do look forward to reading more of her work in future. The subtle homoerotic subtext between Theodora and Eleanor was not something I saw coming, but truly enjoyed it. Although, the pace of the book was a little slower at times, I enjoyed reading this book a lot. It was the perfect pick for a horror newbie Like me.
"Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone."

This book is ok. There is very little suspense or horror, but for the time I suppose it was pretty good.
