A detailed look at community life we rarely see in YA novels. Too many flashbacks from different time periods for me... I couldn't keep up with all the stages and ages we were given of Rosie and Nona.
But really a beautiful exploration of a girl caught between, and with a foot in two worlds.

A fantastic, culturally-sensitive YA book set in Yirrkala/Nhulunbuy. This book explores the impact of the intervention on communities in the NT and racial discrimination and systematic racism that is very much still present to this day. A must read for young Australians.
Graphic: Racial slurs, Racism
I felt Rosie was a little immature at first, but I liked seeing her grow as a person, and mature into a responsible woman. I expected a lot more of Nona in Rosie's story, so it made it sadder (though more touching) when they slowly (and carefully) reconnected.
I really enjoyed being immersed into this setting, so different to 'regular' ya, and I felt like I learnt quite a bit about rural life in the NT.
