Oh, this was a tough one for me. I’d been waiting to read this until I finished Grant County, knowing there’d be a lot about Jeffrey. I’m a Will Trent fan, and not so much Jeffrey, but I still liked his character, and I’d always wondered why he cheated on Sara. It was alluded to in Grant County, but his reasoning felt fairly weak. It’s definitely more fleshed out here, and I definitely appreciate it, but it still felt weak to me (for him as a character). And yet, you still get that Sara is the only woman he ever loved, and perhaps this was his extremely awful way for her to notice the depth of his perceived problem in their marriage. It was nice to revisit them, even at one of their low points, but it definitely solidified for me how much better Will is for Sara.
I mostly loved this book. The writing, as always is amazing. But about an hour and a half before the end, I got where they were going as to the identity of the culprit who’d been committing the heinous crimes. I hated that. I hated who it was. No, I never would have guessed, and perhaps the shock value is why this person was chosen. The why and how of why they did it was great, but the person who did it—it just felt very wrong to me. There was something similar back in the Grant County books, so it kind of felt like we’d been here before.
That said, I continue to love Will and Sara and the rest, and this is really the only book in the series I felt let down.

This was not my personal cup of tea. It wasn't a terribly long book but it took me quite a while to get through. The story itself was capturing, but it could have been wrapped up 100 pages sooner and nothing would have been lost.
A good mystery with loads of description

I think I would have loved it had I not jumped into the series at book ten. This will definitely be one I'll revisit after reading the first nine books.
