Yikes. Awful main character and brimming with dehumanising racism. The back-cover blurb for this book is so off the mark it's shocking - it promised the reader "a sense of freshness and exhilaration" and describes the main character as "Hemingway's hardest hero". No no no. Just yuck. Not spending anymore time on this.

Ugh. Excessive use of the N-word and other racial slurs. Super violent.  I'm struggling to find something I liked about this book. I'm sure in 1930 this book was a revelation - fast, dialog heavy writing style, politics of the time, struggles of the poor.   But, ugh. It was ugh from start to finish. Uncomfortable to read for first 2/3rds, then long winded stream of consciousness at the end.  I didn't like a single character.
