I really enjoyed it and found it lighthearted and fun for a murder mystery. I liked the setting.
Great story but I must mention that, due to its age, the book like previous Sherlock Holmes books contain quite a bit racist remarks including use of derogatory words when referring to certain non-European peoples as well as a flagrant support of phrenology.

"Eh. Holmes is condescending and Watson is complacently tautological. Maybe if this had been written as a serial I'd be more forgiving of the redundancies, but reading about the same insipid clues in a cliffhanger-ish tone four times in an hour killed the story for me. What about the rumors of the hound on the moor? And what about the mysterious bearded stranger? And what were the Barrymores hiding? And who is L.L.? And when will this story ever end?"
