I absolutely loved this book. Sure, I'm a 40-something lawyer dealing with teens, so that resonates. But mostly, I adore Waxman's writing style. So many clever turns of phrase. I highlighted so much more than usual.

Mothering a teen as a single mother with a busy career is not easy. Being a teenager and trying to navigate friends, high school, family, and selecting a college is not easy. Jessica and Emily are struggling with the normal mother daughter things when they go on a trip to look at colleges. Stuck together they have to confront their relationship and what is going on in their own life's. A story of strong women, mother's and daughters, and creating a path that is true to you.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for my honest review.

Jessica is an attorney. She’s worked hard to become a partner. She’s coaching another young female attorney who is up for being partner too. Right before she embarks on a college tour with her 16-year-old daughter, her boss tells her that no woman will be made a partner by the board this year. Jess tells her boss that Valentia will be made a partner or Jess will resign. That’s a big threat and Jess hopes she can stand by it if things don’t work out.

Emily is going on a week-long college tour on the east coast with her mother. She exhibits normal teenage characteristics: moody, sarcastic, and plugged into her phone constantly. She doesn’t have any idea what she wants to major in when she goes to college. Emily is so tired of being nagged by her mom about the whole college experience, too.

I Was Told It Would Get Easier made me laugh! The college visit tour and the self-doubt Jessica feel about how she raised her daughter rings so true to me at the moment. I found this witty, true, and inspiring!

A nice easy read, light with well written humor.

This book was overall pretty good, I enjoyed the college tour storyline because I felt it was a slightly different look on the typical “high schooler doesn’t know what college they want to go to” plot line.

The humor in this book was at times a bit cringey, sometimes I felt that it was trying too hard to be quirky. It also had the stereotypical “all teenagers are obsessed with their phones and social media” mentality and it got a bit old after a while.

Still, I recommend this book as a light
and easy read!

It was a happy accident that I started reading this book when I did. It’s a perfectly simple story to read in an otherwise complicated time. In this one, a somewhat estranged mother and daughter take a college tour trip across the country together. Typical, relatable hiccups are encountered, however, it’s also a surprising take on strong female relationships without feeling forced or too serious. In fact, this book is a very light read overall. If you liked the dynamics of Rory and Lorelei on Gilmore Girls, consider giving this one a try.

In a coming of age story, A single mom and her teenage daughter goes an college trip to reconnect. Jessica is a successful lawyer and overworked mom. Emily is a teenage girl who feels insecure and feels like she's being put last in her mom's priorities. During the tour, they meet a ex-lover, family and friends.

This book is pretty spot on about some of the parenting emotions related to raising teens. The miscommunication and hurt about our kids individualizing and the internal monologues on both sides were pretty spot on. Most of the way through this book it was a solid 4 stars. Then the ending was rushed and slapped on feeling like it didn’t match the rest of the book,
My other big complaint is the extreme privilege portrayed in all the characters. It made it a little fantastical. While the premise was strong and the character portrayal was good the layer of extravagance didn’t add value or humor for me.

This was a great story. Having survived raising two teenage girls successfully (with some help from my husband, their dad) I get it!
Often books that come with reviews of being funny, I don’t find funny. This one was. I actually lol’d at times. I’m definitely going to look for other books by this author. I recommend this book to any parent
