I love how much the world expands with each book in this series. It also got a lot darker than I was expecting, but maybe I should have guessed as the first book is about an assassin. I also think the author does a great job of making even the side characters three dimensional with complex motives even when I donโ€™t like them as people. But they are so realistic in their internal and external conflicts. Definitely will keep reading the series.

This is the first book in the series where I found myself caring for Aelin.

I only started tolerating her about halfway through Heir of Fire - the only thing that kept me reading the first two books is that the side characters were way more interesting than she was. (And yes, I did read Assassin's Blade - and it made my already-dim view of her even worse, oops.)

These "side characters" are starting to become full-fledged characters in this book. It's clear that Aelin is still supposed to be the main character, but Aedion (I know I'm not spelling that correctly), Rowan, Lysandra, and so on are growing on me much faster than our supposed main character did. I am ALL for seeing a full novel from Lysandra's point of view. I know I'm setting myself up for heartbreak, but if Lysandra dies, I'm rioting.

This book wraps up with what seemed to be the end of the story - yes, there are a few unknowns, but I was not expecting there to still be THREE MORE BOOKS LEFT. That leaves a lot of time for people to die/for things to go wrong.

I believe this is the best book in the series so far. It's driven by a hunger for justice and a bond between family and friends, both created and reunited. Beautiful.

This book was just amazing. Everything picked up in the last book, and this one just ran with it in the best way possible. I have to give it 4.75 because I technically didnโ€™t like it as much as Heir of Fire, but this is definitely one of my top reads ever.

There's vague-ish spoilers in here throughout but no huge plot points so I'm not gonna worry about tagging them, I'm sorry ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

I loved every minute of this book. I read the assassin's blade before this bc I heard it had a really high emotional impact and holy shit, it was perfect. Having TAB freshly on my mind made so much of this book more intense. I loved heir of fire but I actually think this one beat it. Literally my only two not-wildly-in-love thoughts were that it almost felt like too many POVs with the introduction of Elide, but even then ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ I really liked elide. My other thought was that aedion got real weird about aelin for a minute despite the fact that they're obviously not love interests and never could be. I understand he missed her and blah blah blah whatever but oh my god all the stuff about her scent and her body and everything was real weird for a cousin, I'm just saying ๐Ÿคจ now rowan's thoughts about aelin's scent and body, on the other hand, well... heh ๐Ÿ˜Œ more please ๐Ÿ˜Œ bc seriously good hell no more teasing, I just can't take it ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

Even chaol pissbaby westfall had some redemption towards the end. I didn't think I'd care if he got redemption, he's my tog tamlin at this point, buuuut he did do something useful so I guess I could allow it.

Seeing aelin do all the cool shit she did tho? That was just. Truly the best. The very best. She and her court have my endless love and respect and adoration. Queen of terrasen, queen of my heart. Mwah. Incredible. I fuckin loved this book. Peak SJM to say the least. The plot twist towards the end had me literally gasping out loud. Now, is that maybe bc I'm a little dumb and didn't see it coming? Possibly. Do I care? No. ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿป

Excellent book, can't wait for the rest ๐Ÿ˜Œ
