Excellent book, although slow-moving at times. A good comprehensive picture of Putin.
Although this was very well written, I could not finish it since it's a very dense book and my library had a 3 week only limit on it. Also, there were lots of names thrown around and it's very hard to remember who's who. But this book will please those who are deeply into foreign policy and the workings of the KGB, as well as those that want to know how Putin became what he is today.
The final putting down of a good book is often a saddening occurrence. The putting down of this book, however, may just be the saddest of them all so far. There have been few books that can compare with the thrilling, eye-opening, amazing events which have characterized the last twenty years in Russia, embodied by its leader, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. So many terrorist attacks fill its pages (along with so many conspiracy theories that Putin was the mastermind thereof); so many mysterious deaths occupy its 25 chapters (along with so many insinuations that Putin was the mastermind thereof); so many mistakes and stupid fumbles, from the sinking of the submarine Kursk to the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. This book is perhaps the most significant I've ever encountered, and I yearn to find just a few more of equal worth.
A fascinating and detailed look at the life of Vladimir Putin that can't help but feel somewhat incomplete since it stops just short of the meddling in the 2016 election. I can only assume that Myers is working on an update and I will definitely check out the new version if that's the case. As it stands, Putin's early career is the most interesting part of this biography, partly because it is the least familiar.
